(Yes, the "42" on the mother's wing tag is a nod to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. "42: the meaning of life, the universe, and everything".)

In the 1980's there were only 22 California Condors left in the wild. They have become an icon of extinction, and extensive conservation efforts have luckily helped boost their population to around 600 individuals (both wild and captive).

A few years ago my local zoo welcomed a small group of California Condors who could not be released into the wild. I made a special trip to visit them and knew it would be exciting, but didn't anticipate the tears, the love, and the gratitude I felt as I stood before these massive birds, perched high and proud, wings stretched toward the sunshine.

No longer just another tale of human-driven extinction, but a true living creature, majestic and *real*.

How very close that experience was to never getting to happen at all, for me and everybody else who would have had the misfortune of living in a world without condors.
