People are often surprised to learn that bobcats are all around us. They are stealthy, quiet, and their mottled coat helps them blend in perfectly with low, dense foliage, even in human populated areas. For these reasons you’ll likely be hard-pressed to see one, especially if you aren’t inclined to look for them in the first place. Despite their secretive nature, we coexist alongside one another, both connected to and affected by changes in the land.

The unseen nature of so many of our wild kin makes me wonder if we can learn to live in a way that holds space for the wellbeing of all creatures, even if we don’t know them personally. Can we learn to love and care for our land without needing to interact with it personally? Can we show abundant, infinite compassion for our wild neighbors without needing to draw lines to designate where our care is “allowed” to end–or who is worthy of care and who is not in the first place? Just because we don’t see the harm being done to the forests, wetlands, and our own neighborhood greenspaces doesn’t mean it isn’t happening or that the effects don’t impact each and every one of us.

The world is endlessly and intricately alive with love, and so much of it is found closer to home than we often believe.

Species featured are a Bobcat, Himalayan Blackberry, and Sword Fern.
