This piece was originally part of my 2025 solo show "Good Fire" at Antler Gallery in Portland, Oregon. The series was focused on wildfire ecology i the Pacific Northwest. In this painting we see some of the animals and plants that a resilient to fire. Turtles will burrow underground to escape the heat, and this Painted Turtle is emerging into a charred landscape that wildflowers like camas, beargrass, and fireweed have already settled in. When I hike through burned landscapes I am often struck by the juxtaposition of the blackened land and the bright wildflowers and conifer saplings that have, against all odds, manage to resettle in the wake of the flames. It is a potent scene of hope.
